How To Remove Those "YUCKY" Weeds

Port Bay resident, Bill Kramer couldn't fish off his dock because of thick weeds that grow every summer.  Swimming was another impossibility.  He and his wife, Jan, were becoming very frustrated that the weeds took away the enjoyment of living next to the bay.

Kramer, like lots of us bay people, tried eliminating the weeds with a garden rake.  "That didn't work", he said, "I had to twist and turn the rake like I was eating spagetti!"

The Next step for the Xerox Engineer was to design his own rake.  "I checked various patents to see if anyone had designed a rake for cleaning weeds from the water" Kramer said.  He found patents for many uses, but none applied for his need.  "I found no patents, so I figured I would design my own rake" Kramer added.  Although the rake is simple in design, Kramer spent considerable time trying to develop an implement that was not too costly, and would effectively take out the weeds.  "I had a long handle on one of my rakes, but it was always getting in the way." Kramer said.  "I ended up with an 6 foot handle that was strong enough to support the heavy weeds."

The working end of the rake that Kramer calls the Sea-Weeder is constructed with a light weight steel alloy that is plated, to prevent any rusting.  Small slots are cut into the head which grasp the weeds either by shearing them at the bottom or pulling them out by the roots.

Kramer ties a 16 foot rope to the handle to extend the rakes reach.

After the Sea-Weeder is tossed into the water the head sinks to the bottom while the handle floats.  "All you have to do is pull the rake in and the head skims the bottom catching the weeds as close to the bottom as possible" Kramer said.
